Central Smith’s Commitment to Sustainability

Central Smith has made a commitment to become a more sustainable organization. Our efforts today can build a better tomorrow. We are working towards becoming conscious of how our decisions today can affect our planet for years to come.

At the beginning of 2021, Central Smith has partnered with Sustainable Peterborough to promote sustainable practices in manufacturing. Sustainable Peterborough is a community-based, regional partnership where groups, residents, and organizations work together to create a sustainable future. Central Smith is one of 180 Community Partners, making effort to engage in sustainable activities to create a better future. Central Smith established an internal Sustainability Committee, comprised of employees to spearhead our sustainability journey. Our Sustainability Committee meets monthly to review our progress and set goals to move forward. As of now, our Sustainability Committee has implemented various tracking sheets to record and reduce our water usage, energy usage, and manufacturing waste.

Central Smith has continually made efforts to improve our state-of-the-art facility to become more sustainable and energy efficient. These efforts include using energy efficient light bulbs throughout our building and limiting usage where possible, using steam from our production process to heat our facilities, and moving to energy efficient freezing units, starting with our newest freezer expansion.

Central Smith is proud to use 100% local Canadian Dairy to support our local economy and reduce our carbon footprint. Canadian dairy farmers have made efforts towards sustainability using renewable energy, reduce their emissions, and recycle water. Central Smith is proud to support these efforts.

All of our Central Smith packaging is recyclable, including our take-home tubs, scooping tubs, and parlour supplies. Our take-home tubs and scooping tubs can be 100% recycled and we encourage our customers to recycle or reuse their tubs. We repurpose tubs in our facility for trash bins in every office and regularly donate empty tubs to be put to good use! To find out what you can do with your tubs, find some ideas here. Our parlour supplies can be recycled including our cups, spoons, and napkins and we offer paper straws for milkshakes!

We partner with local farmers to divert approximately 232,000 lbs of waste from landfills annually to support our local farmers. This diverted waste is used primarily for livestock.
