Why We Keep Coming Back to Our Favourite Flavours

The Stories Behind Every Scoop

Have you ever wondered why we keep coming back to the same ice cream flavours, even when there are countless new ones to try?

Ice cream and nostalgia go hand in hand. For many of us, a favourite flavour is tied to some of life's most memorable moments: summer vacations, family outings, celebrations, or time spent with people we care about. Over the years, those familiar scoops become more than just a treat. They become small reminders of moments we’d love to relive.

A Taste of a Memory

Let’s start with a quick exercise: take a moment to picture yourself enjoying a scoop of your favourite ice cream flavour.

As you imagined it, did you also picture where you were? How old you were? Who you were with? Maybe you pictured the weather, the time of year, or even the occasion of the specific day. Often, the entire experience comes to mind just as quickly as the taste.

That's what makes ice cream so special. It has a way of becoming woven into our memories, turning an ordinary dessert into something meaningful.

The Comfort of Familiarity

With so many choices competing for our attention every day, there's something comforting about returning to an ice cream flavour you know and love.

Whether it's classic vanilla, rich chocolate, or a flavour you've enjoyed forever, these go-to choices offer a sense of consistency and comfort. Sometimes, the best choice is the one that never disappoints.

Returning to the Places that Matter Most

Some of our strongest ice cream memories are linked to the places we return to again and again. A cottage, summer camp, hometown parlour, or family gathering spot can make a particular scoop feel even more nostalgic.

When we return to those places, the flavours we enjoy are part of the overall experience. Together, they become traditions we’re excited to revisit year after year.

The People Behind our Favourite Flavours

Many of the flavours we love are linked to the people who first shared them with us.

For example, whenever I see Pralines ‘N’ Cream in a scooping parlour, I immediately think of my grandmother. She always keeps a tub in her freezer and still chooses it every time we go out for ice cream together. It has become more than just an ice cream choice, but a reminder of her.

Many of us have a scoop that instantly brings someone to mind. The taste of a special treat might remind us of a parent, grandparent, sibling, or friend, bringing back memories of time spent together and helping us feel connected to the people who matter most.

Sharing Favourites Across Generations

Beloved ice cream traditions are often passed down through families. Parents introduce their children to the flavours they loved growing up, creating new traditions while keeping old ones alive.

These shared favourites become an important part of family stories, continuing traditions across generations.
