Sustainability
Our commitment to sustainability is a huge focus in everything we do here at Central Smith, from the manufacturing process all the way through to the packaging and delivery. As we all know, the environment is in a fragile state, and we want to continue to focus on doing our part by improving our processes to make sure we feel good about the product we’re producing, and our customers do, too!
One interesting fact about what happens here at Central Smith is we run at about a 1% waste rate overall. Throughout the course of the production process, we are sometimes left with edible waste from the product in which we’re making at the time. When this happens, we transport the edible waste to a bio-gester or a local pig farmer for feed. Every bit of ice cream we make is packaged in recyclable containers, along with 99.8% of all raw material packaging is recyclable as well. We have a robust recycling program in which all cardboard, plastic and paper is picked up weekly for recycling.
Our building is state of the art and unique when it comes to sustainability and efficiency. We operate a close looped system for our heating and cooling. In fact, all the waste heat is cycled through the floors to heat the building in the winter, and the cooling is cycled through the building to cool it in the summer.
In 2019, we challenged our employees with the task of reducing waste and the amount of paper that is consumed in the office on a daily basis. Some creative ideas came from this initiative such as investing in tablets and opting out of paper to better manage cycle counting, and we changed up a lot of processes to ensure little paper is being used. The employees have become very conscious of the decisions they make on a daily basis not only in the office, but in their personal lives as well. Now we ask you! Do you have any ideas on how we can reduce, reuse and recycle?
