That July Birthday Feeling!

It’s all about summer celebrations in our parlour when it comes to July. And by parlour we mean flavours! We are going to need all the flavour we can get starting with Canada Day. It would only be right to eat Birthday Cake ice cream on July 1st. Customers deserve free Birthday Cake ice cream if their birthday is in July! After all, they are surrounded by special ice cream occasions and may feel left out.

Speaking of birthdays and being really Canadian, yours truly, Central Smith turns 128 this month! That’s a pretty good excuse for Birthday Cake ice cream. We are also proud to be listed on the Canadian Historic Places Days list , which means you can visit us and have an ice cream at our original creamery site! What’s a day trip without ice cream!

On Sunday July 21 when National Ice Cream Day rolls around, you will want to indulge in your favourite flavour or maybe try something entirely new. Obviously, these are our favourite days of the year when we can pretty much justify all the ice cream eating. That makes us wonder how much ice cream do Canadians eat exactly? Apparently, we rank #6 in the world! We enjoy close to 4.5 litres of ice cream annually which totals about 85 scoops!

There are many ways to get our annual intake of 85 scoops! Consider ice cream sandwiches as easy summer serve snacks. Many local bakeries can supply a host of cookie options and paired with any flavour is going to be a welcome parlour treat. All you need is a scoop of Peanut Butter Pretzel between some favourite cookies, roll the edges in crushed pretzels, sprinkles or chocolate flakes.

Since July feels so Canadian what about donut ice cream sandwiches? Donuts are Canadian symbols we eat and pretty much sold on every corner so getting your hands on one to make this could turn into a parlour favourite. July could feature the Maple Glazed Donut Ice Cream Sandwich special! After all Canada produces 71% of the world’s pure maple syrup. And, embarrassing as it is, Canada eats more donuts per capita than anywhere else. We are definitely getting our scoops in at this rate! (apparently, we spell donut this way too)

On July 30, approximately 300 restaurants across Canada will celebrate all things culinary on Food Day Canada. It would only be proper to pay homage to our rich Canadian food heritage with ice cream. We know our parlour and restaurant partners look forward to serving up timeless classics that spell Canadian, like our unique to Central Smith flavour Algonquin Canoe. Imagine French Vanilla ice cream with a hint of maple flavour with chocolate ripple and chocolate caramel canoes! It’s basically Canada in a dish!

Another serving idea to honour a Canadian food tradition are sundaes. We call this one the Algonquin Sund-eh! Algonquin Canoe ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream and top with a maple candy. It would come as no surprise then to learn that Canada was responsible for the world’s largest sundae in 1984, in you guessed it, July. This jumbo treat was created with 63 flavours and weighed in at almost 25 tonnes!

It's getting easier to see how, as Canadians, we consume those 85 scoops per year! It seems we have no shortage of how and where to serve ice cream. At Central Smith we’ve been around since 1896 and producing premium ice cream since 1952, so we know a thing or two about how important ice cream is to our coast-to-coast customers. We wish you all a happy Canada Day and we look forward to continuing to make your Canadian ice cream dreams a reality.
