How to Create the Perfect Ice Cream Cone at Home?

Like all great things in life the perfect ice cream cone starts with the correct base. There are many versions of cones out there, the purpose of this blog is to introduce you to a few you may not have heard of.

The Regular Cake Cone:  These are the classic cones you see at most scooping parlours and ice cream shops. This cone is very bland in flavour and was developed to compliment any ice cream flavour. They come as a flat bottom or pointed cone. At Central Smith we use a #1 pointed cone.

Sugar Cones are the next category; these cones are made with brown sugar and give a delightful crunch when bitten into. Perfect for a variety of flavours and offer a slightly more robust treat compared to the traditional cake cone. We’ve seen the sugar cone in a variety of flavours including vanilla, chocolate and Black Sesame.

Waffle Cones are the most popular cone we scoop into at Central Smith. These cones are made with a light batter and cooked until crispy the formed into the cone shape.

We purchase our waffle cones from Donsig Cones; they supply the finest waffle cones and waffle bowls. We like the medium size. Many people make their own waffle cones; we are experts in ice cream not cones!

The Bubble Cone is popular in the Asian market. These cones are made with a pancake like batter that has a pattern of bubbles. We’ve even seen a fun “fish” shape with these cones.

The “Chimney Cone” is a Hungarian treat that is a bread like pastry with a hollow, cylindrical shape. It has a satisfying crunch on the outside (often made with sugar and cinnamon) and soft, fliffy dough on the inside. Traditionally served with cream but Ice Cream happily fits inside!

One other option to enhance any “cone” is to dip them in a chocolate, be it white chocolate, milk chocolate or dark chocolate and then role in any variety of sprinkles, crushed cookies, candies, cereal, nuts… Your imagination is the only limit to creating these fun eye catching additions to your ice cream shop.

No matter what you choose for your base it is the Ice Cream that makes the experience worth-while!

Stay tuned and we will walk you through our flavours in our next blog.
