A Day in the Life of Matt (Eastern Canada Sales Manager)
The best (and worst) part of my job? No two days are ever the same and are really only limited by my imagination. In the exciting and fast paced world of food service, there are so many moving parts that there is a constant flow to my day and never-ending lists of things to accomplish.
The territory I cover ranges from Hwy 400, north through the Muskokas and east in Ontario, through Quebec and into Atlantic Canada. I am grateful to live in a country so rich in natural beauty and diverse culture, and fortunate to work with the people I do.
Some of my favourite times are tucking into projects that I can sink my teeth into - cool people to work with on a co-packaging or other opportunity, usually from a great company that share a synergy stemming from similar core values as our team here at Central Smith.
Another kick I get is when something you reach out for on a whim turns into a fantastic opportunity! An outside the box approach to an old problem or idea, that when it gets approached from a new angle magically comes together. The first thought after it clicks is inevitably “why didn’t I see that before?”
Our mornings start with a team huddle; a quick brief / de-brief of relevant information from each of the departments across the company. I have my “to do” list and things to pick away at as time permits throughout the day, ranging from short to long-term goals, visiting accounts and ongoing projects. The day usually gets broken up by at least one meeting and also the unplanned - there are inbound calls and emails from people with co-packing inquiries, scooping parlours, suppliers, brokers, and/or distributors that need a hand with a customer or a question answered.
Working in a small, family-owned company gives me the opportunity to wear different hats and learn about all parts of the business, including quality assurance, production, logistics and ordering.
Arguably the best part of my job? Ice cream samples! Testing a potential new flavour, providing feedback for sensory quality, or the latest magic created by our marketing team for a social media post, those unexpected treats always make the day a little brighter.
I love working with ice cream because it can be experiential and everyone has a memory that can be tied to the frozen, creamy goodness - whether getting spoiled by grandparents, at an amusement park with bright lights from the midway, walks through the park on a warm summer night or as a celebratory treat.
Day after day of the same might be nice for some, but I wouldn’t have it any other way…
Dreaming in Ice Cream is awesome!!!
